Masterclass with Award Winning Violist - Matthew Young

On May 3, 2015, an award winning violist, Matthew Young, from the San Francisco Symphony Orchestra, came to give a masterclass to our chamber students.  Our students played chamber works by Dvorak, Rossini, and Schubert.  Our students had a wonderful time performing for Mr. Young. Thank you Matthew Young!

Find below a short biography of Matthew Young.

Matthew J. Young has played chamber music with members of the Cleveland, Juilliard and Takacs quartets, the Florestan Trio, members of the top orchestras of Berlin, Boston, Chicago, Cleveland, Concertgebauw, Los Angeles, New York, Philadelphia, San Francisco, Valdosta, as well as having formed the Verklärte Quartet, which won grand prize of the Fischoff International Chamber Music Competition during his time with that group. He is now a member of the San Francisco Symphony. Matt is excited to be part of an artistic “start up” in San Francisco. He is focused on forming connections with new and old audiences, underserved or unconnected to art music.

Sharing Music

On April 5th, Cal Music Prep students gave an Easter performance at Sunny View Retirement Community.  The dining hall was packed with seniors enjoying refreshments while listening to music. Many were moved to the point of tearing up.

On April 11th, Cal Music Prep students were back at El Camino Hospital sharing music with the sick as part of their Healing Arts Program.  Their music filled the atrium and was enjoyed by all at the hospital.

The best part of music is definitely the gift of sharing it with others.

Congratulations to our chamber groups!

We are proud to announce recent results of competitions that our groups participated in:

JAW Piano Trio - 1st Prize at MTAC VOCE, SF Branch

Apollo Quartet - 2nd Prize at MTAC VOCE, SF Branch

JAW Piano Trio will be performing in state finals on April 19 at Chapman University in Orange, CA.

The Elysium Cello Quartet was invited to participate in the 62nd Annual Junior Bach Festival in Berkeley. They will perform a transcription of the Sarabande and Gavottes from Suite No. 6 in D Major on March 13, 2015 at the Crowden School in Berkeley.

Sharing Music with Others

We wanted to share some music with the community and had two great opportunities to do so this past December.

On December 9th, our students had the opportunity to perform holiday music for the homeless while dinner was being served to them. We partnered with InnVision Shelter Network who provided the hot meals for the homeless at Grace Lutheran Church in Palo Alto. Many of the homeless approached us to thank us and to talk to us about the music we played.

On December 30th, our students performed for the Sunny View Retirement Community in Cupertino. The elderly were so moved by our music, some teared, and many came to us to thank us for performing for them.

We were lucky to witness the power of music on others.
